About the Association québécoise des marionnettistes (AQM)
Founded in 1981, AQM was established by puppeteers to create an organization dedicated to the recognition and development of the puppetry arts in Quebec. Since the fall of 2018, it has been housed at the Maison internationale des arts de la marionnette (MIAM) and participates in the management of this venue as a co-founder alongside Casteliers, a theatre organization that specializes in puppetry arts.
AQM has launched a digital portal, marionNET.ca, which aims to increase the discoverability of artists and their works. As a cultural mediation tool that enhances the web presence of puppetry, marionNET.ca ensures the preservation of a multifaceted heritage by fostering synergy between heritage institutions, creative artists, and research.

Internship Description
The Association québécoise des marionnettistes is working to establish a portal for puppetry arts, marionNET.ca. This tool reflects the diversity of artistic practices, including those of indigenous peoples. Opening a dialogue around traditional practices and knowledge involves recognizing biases related to Western theatrical concepts. To begin tackling this colonial issue, we aim to conduct a survey among the indigenous nations living along the Saint Lawrence River (Kanien’kehà:ka, Innus, Wendat, Wolastoqiyik…). This survey will seek to identify points of convergence between arts utilizing object performance and indigenous performative arts, in order to strengthen mutual understanding and trust.

The research officer’s tasks include:

  • Defining the research scope (objectives, target groups, type of information to be collected, methodology);
  • Developing and distributing the survey;
  • Conducting qualitative interviews in person;
  • Compiling and analyzing responses;
  • Taking part in the monitoring committee of the marionNET.ca portal.

The research officer will work under the supervision of AQM’s general manager and will be supported by an Indigenous mentor specialized in performing arts.

Desired Knowledge and Skills:

  • Good understanding of issues in performing arts;
  • Functional proficiency in French and English is an asset;
  • Relevant university education is an asset, e.g., in performing arts, ethnology, anthropology;
  • Essential qualities: curiosity and initiative.

To apply, please submit your application (including resume and cover letter) to the attention of Vincent Ranallo, General Manager, at coordination@aqm.ca by Monday, September 2, 2024.

AQM thanks you for your interest in this position. Only selected candidates will be contacted.
