Founded by Casteliers, a specialized theatre presenter dedicated to puppetry arts, and the Association québécoise des marionnettistes, the Maison internationale des arts de la marionnette (MIAM) opened its doors in the fall of 2018 in Montréal. One of the city’s 375th anniversary celebrations legacy investments, the MIAM is located in the Outremont borough cultural hub. Casteliers and the AQM have their offices in the building, and Casteliers is the emphyteutic owner.

An international centre dedicated to puppetry arts
The MIAM is a centre for research and creation entirely dedicated to puppetry arts. It provides specialized spaces and facilities for production, training, and rehearsals. The MIAM is also open to the community at large through the presentation of shows and a range of cultural outreach activities for children, adults and seniors eager to learn more about this art form.
MIAM offers artists, local residents and visitors:
- a well-equipped creative lab,
- a well-equipped workshop,
- a multi-functional space open to the community,
- specialized resources and know-how.
Built on a foundation of collaboration and resource sharing, the MIAM is, by definition, a puppetry arts hub. Its rental facilities and activities are guided by its founders, partners, and users, resulting in a versatile, spontaneous and ever-evolving range of programed activities.
By establishing this centre—the only one of its kind in Canada—the AQM and Casteliers have joined forces in a shared space to pursue their respective missions, support the advancement of the discipline, and broaden the national and international reach of the puppetry arts. Staff from both organizations are dedicated to the MIAM, making it possible to implement a dynamic, structuring project, and offer first-rate services in an inspiring environment.
The AQM also runs several of its workshops and courses there, providing continuing professional development for puppeteers from here and abroad.
