Description
Laurence Petitpas is a multidisciplinary artist who graduated with a DESS in Contemporary Puppet Theatre from UQAM in 2017. Through a stage writing process rooted in interaction with her puppets and the audience, she explores how performances can create moments of communion. Driven by the vitality of inert matter, she designs both miniature puppet-objects and wearable performance costumes, using materials as diverse as oyster shells and urethane foam. A trained musician as well, she places great importance on sound atmospheres.
Since 2020, she has presented her works (Mutatis Mutandis!, Soudain les îles) in Quebec, British Columbia, and Europe. As a member of the Culture-Éducation directory, she leads workshops in elementary and secondary schools, as well as specialized training sessions for cultural organizations such as the Quebec Association of Puppeteers (AQM), the Independent Arts Peer Network (REPAIRE), and Cirque du Monde.
A multiple grant recipient from both the Conseil des arts et des lettres du Québec (CALQ) and the Canada Council for the Arts (CCA), she is undertaking two research and development residencies in 2024: one at Tokyo Arts and Space (TOKAS) for three months, and another at the Fossekleiva Cultural Centre in Norway for two months.
