Description
Puppeteer and sculptor, general and artistic codirector of L’Os de Bois, Noémi Bélanger creates visual worlds characterized by her desire to give life to the inanimate. Through her narrative works, she seeks to redefine the relationship between species, presenting human and animal characters who rub shoulders and reveal themselves. Her works, which range in size up to the human scale, coexist in stagings in exhibition halls, concert halls and on screen. Her work is presented as a visual poem in which the narrative unfolds more through images than words, in an atmosphere imbued with symbolism, situating her work at the junction of fine crafts and the performing arts.
Concerned about environmental impact, she uses an ancestral and little-known needle-felting technique to make her characters, using wool to create volumes. The novelty of her work, and her unique expertise in the field of textile arts, have created a real interest in the puppet theater and fine crafts communities, leading her to exhibit her work in solo shows at the Musée des métiers d’art du Québec (2019), the Centre d’art de la ville de La Sarre (2022) and the Centre national d’exposition (2023), and to give professional workshops.
