About
The adventure can take place in a street, between buildings, in any urban communities, or even in a natural environment. Boreas[1], this majestic moose can appear anywhere. He walks around with the sounds, the essence, and the smells of nature. Through Boreas, we experience the four seasons, equally visually, olfactory, and poetically. On the lookout, he moves slowly as he discovers a brand-new environment. He tries to fit in all this invasive concrete and in few green spaces that remind him of his natural habitat. This journey makes the audience live the cycle of nature, as it carries the sounds, the smells and the colours of winter, spring, summer, and autumn. The Boreal King is a time to see, hear, feel, and let yourself be carried away by this poetry. It’s an opportunity to take time to observe!
This 30-minute wordless ambulatory show is designed to be performed outdoors, in street theatres, festivals or in any other outdoor events. The puppet is autonomous in terms of sound and lighting.
[1] Boreas, from the Greek Boreas, literally means “the north wind”, Gods of the north wind.
GENESIS
The creation of The Boreal King started at the beginning of the pandemic, where we could see, all over the world, photos of wild animals venturing into cities. Carl was greatly touched by these images of wildlife and urban invasion merging, and it led him to create this specific kind of poetry. These images also echo the back-to-basic movement we are currently experiencing; a movement of deceleration to take time to look around us. He wanted to bring out a multisensory poetry through a life-size moose, this giant of our Quebec forests. Here is this wild poetry!
WHY THE BOREAL KING
The Boreal King is about taking time and allow spectators to observe. It enables them to see, feel, hear, and be carried away by this imposing and majestic moose’s poetry. It offers a multisensory theatrical awakening – visual, sound, smell – global. Fond of image and atmospheric theatre, Carl Veilleux is the artistic director, scriptwriter, and stage director. He is interested in street drama and in the use of additions of codes (light, smells, sound) to make his work heard.
This led him to explore different theatrical avenues.
Giant Puppet Theatre
Giant puppet theatre is often considered to be for parades or simply an oversized performance. However, this is much more. A giant puppet can be a shape, a symbol, a character, a place, or time. It is the mirror of our imaginary; it confronts and questions us and makes us think. It allows us to open our eyes wide and welcome, in an impromptu moment, a kind of vertigo.
This astonishing puppet who is able to stop time, is a poetic character which allows the audience to participate to its imaginary journey in another dimension.
This particular giant puppet has been made for the Wow!… It creates a grand effect, of course, but it also leads to dramatic poetic moments, full of meaning, allegories, and metaphors.
